George's at the Cove (La Jolla)

It's been here since the '60s, and locals still treat it as the go-to for fresh fish and casual seafood lunches. The fried plates and fish sandwiches are the move. Upstairs patio if you want the harbor view.

This is where the fishermen eat. Not a tourist trap.

Two Ways to Spend a Summer Afternoon

Seaport Village

One of the Nation's Largest Battery Facilities Just Opened in Poway

San Diego's grid just got a major upgrade, and it's sitting quietly in North County.

The Nighthawk Energy Storage Project opened this month in Poway. One of the largest battery storage facilities in the country: 300 megawatts of output, 1,200 megawatt-hours of capacity. Enough to keep 385,000 homes running for four hours.

This is the first facility online since a string of battery fires two years ago. 

The difference: 329 Tesla Megapack batteries using lithium iron phosphate, the chemistry most resistant to thermal runaway. Plus infrared cameras, independent fire suppression, and a 12-foot perimeter wall.

The energy goes to PG&E up north, but the benefits ripple locally. Grid reliability improves. Power price volatility drops. And the facility will generate over $30 million in property taxes over its lifetime.

Why this matters here:

Infrastructure like this doesn't make headlines, but it shapes long-term livability. San Diego's grid has been a question mark for years: aging systems, wildfire risk, increasing demand. Projects like Nighthawk signal the region is building toward something more stable.

Not the flashiest story. But the kind of thing that shows up in how a region holds value over time.
